Soooo...I am actually on a vacation of sorts this week! (We are making the grandparent circut for the next two weeks) And in honor of my vacation, I am doing a special vacation blog today!

The best thing about this vacation is that unlike most years, I don't have a suitcase full of books with me. Normally, I have at least 3 or 4 books stuffed in a pocket of my suitcase somewhere. They always end up squished and bent by the end, because they are vying for space with the kids bathing suits and the stuffed animals that just couldn't be left behind all by themselves. It isn't that I have given up reading!! No, that would actually cause me to wither away and die! This year, I have a Kindle.

Now, my mother-in-law got a Kindle about 3 years ago when they first came out and would sing it's praises to me all the time because she knows that I like to read. My husband kept asking me if I wanted a Kindle for birthdays or Christmas. I was adamant that I didn't want one.

I am a book person. I have shelves and shelves of books. I read some books over and over again (I have re-read the Harry Potter books an emabarrassing number of times). I like the feel of a book in my hand, and the smell when you first crack it open. I like to hold it in my hand. Or I thought that I did.

At the beginning of the summer, I left a job that I had been doing for a while and the people who worked for me got together and bought me a Kindle. Now, I believe that I have established that I am a techtard, so holding what should be a book seemed a little intimidating.

I plugged it in to charge it, while reading over the half page of instructions (really? half a page?? I need more guidance than that!) and then started pushing buttons. I was fascinated.

The first book that I bought was Dead in the Family. Normally, I buy the new book from the series that I read on the day that they are released, but I hadn't had a chance to get to the bookstore yet. I was instantly in love!! Me, who swore up and down that I loved my books and couldn't imagine not actually holding one, was in love with this thin piece of metal.

Here are my reasons for loving my Kindle:

1. For whatever reason, publishers have started releasing books in hardback. Now, that would be fine, if I had been buying the hardbacks all along. I have both hardback and paperback in my Harry Potter and Twilight series. But, my Sookie books and BDB are all paperbacks, and buying that hardback really messes up the aesthetic of my bookshelf! And I'm too impatient to wait for the paperback to be released in who knows how many months! With my Kindle, I get it on the release day and can read it, then buy the paperback for my "collection" when it comes out.

2. Because there is no way that I could wait until the paperback came out (see above) to read, I would spend the $20+ on the hardback so I could read it. The Kindle version, while not as inexpensive as a paperback, is still cheaper than the hardback.

3.If I am at the park with my kids and finish reading a book, I can IMMEDIATELY download another one. The kids get to keep playing because I'm not bored out of my mind with nothing to do, and I get to read in relative peace - win/win!

And by the same reasoning, now, instead of having to leave things out when I pack so I can bring extra books, I have room in my suitcase for my bathing suit...not that that's a good thing in my book!

  1. Hi Jessica! I love my ereader too. I have a Nook but I was torn between that and the Kindle. The only reason I went w/ the Nook was so that I could borrow books from my local library which just started offering ebooks. I have noticed that Amazon prices for the Kindle seem to be the cheapest around and of course their selection is unbeatable.

  2. Bravo for Blogging on the road! Glad to hear you're liking the Kindle. I don't have one yet, but the immediate download is what sounds appealing to me. And the not lugging of the books. Hmm...

    Have a fun trip!
