I guess I should start with introductions (that's what my mom taught me was proper)?
So I'm Jessica McQuinn. I'm a 40ish mom of two living in Utah and trying to write. I have been lucky enough to have my first book, Passion Fish, published recently and have just finished my second.
As a new author and full time mom, I'm finding it hard to keep up with life in general. That's why I called my blog "Life Happened." Becuase it's like I turned around one day, and suddenly I was married with kids in school...what happened? When did life happen and I didn't notice? So a lot of what I will talk about will be things that happened while I wasn't looking (my kids both being in school full time is the one that is boggling my mind right now!).
One thing to know about me is that I am a tech tard!! I wear the badge proudly (take note of the age mentioned earlier!!)! Honestly I didn't even know how to text until a few years ago, and I have recently been yelled at for not being able to take and send pictures on my phone. Things like, "We have to teach Jessica how to__________(fill in the blank)." can frequently be heard when I'm among friends. So, in all likelyhood, I will mess something up and either forget to hit a button or something along the way. Be patient with me!
Okay, so I am a mom and have been married to the my husband for 20 years (I told you I was 40ish!). I have two beautiful children; a boy and a girl. I have TRUE Irish Twins. My daughter was born in January of 2003 and my son in November of 2003! Remind me someday to tell the story about finding out about that!!
Both of my kids are involved in a lot of activities from theatre, to wrestling (that's going to pay for the boys college - *fingerscrossed*), to cheerleading...then throw in school and church and we stay busy! The one good thing about driving them all over the place is that while I wait for them, I can read.
One of my best friends told me, "Behind every avid reader is an aspiring writer." And it's true! I don't think that I would have started writing as a young girl if I hadn't been a big reader already. I read every Judy Blume that I could get my hands on (including Forever, which I took to school in the 6th grade and got in trouble for reading all the "good" parts to my friends). After Judy Blume I moved on to SE Hinton, and then anything else that I could find. So, I will also talk about some of the books that I like or that I'm reading from time to time.
I will say that I recently recieved a Kindle as a gift (thank you all of you - you know who you are!) and I absolutely love it!! I am reading one of my favorite authors, Maeve Binchey's, newest book, Heart and Soul on it right now, and I take it everywhere with me. If you haven't read anything by Maeve Binchy...you should.
My recommendation for this first post is one of my favorite books of all time, The Glass Lake by Maeve Binchey. I absolutely love this book. My paperback copy is tattered and even missing pages I think because I have read it so many times. It is the story of life in a small Irish town in the 50/60's. All the relationships and how everything is tied to together are some of my favorite things about Binchey's writing. Every decision that is made can affect not only that person, but those around them as well. Binchey does such a beautiful job with this, and I love all of her work
In the end, I hope that I can make you laugh a little at the things that go on in my life?
Ohhhh...check back on Monday for a new feature we are starting called Meet the Author Monday blog hop! (Hopefully I will get it set up right - techtard, remember!!)
